The Musical, made movie, “Les Miserables,” starring Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe became one of the most popular, award-winning movie classics in the world. The movie grossed $18.2 million within the first few hours of its release. It won three Oscars. Hollywood’s liberal elite loves both the music and the storyline and boast of it as, “the timeless classic.”
I find it so ironic since the centerpiece of the story is the Gospel of Jesus Christ!
The movie is full of Christian themes including mercy, grace, self-sacrifice and forgiveness. The main character, Jean Valjean is marvelously transformed by the power of God’s love and goes on to live a fruitful life that in turn, affects many.
I recommend the movie, but far more, I recommend the message!
In a darkened world so full hate, prejudice, wantonness and injustice, you would think people would embrace the message of Christ. But they don’t. Jesus was right when He said, “Men love darkness rather than Light, because their deeds are evil; and neither do they come to the Light, lest their deeds be exposed.” (John 3:19-20)
People love the movie, however, by nature we avoid the truth.
“What is Truth?” Mockingly, Pilate asked Jesus this question right before He was led away to crucifixion. Pilate’s inquiry only complicated the truth. Sin always complicates the truth. Sin complicates life. And the further a person gets away from God, the more complicated it becomes. God made truth simple, and the closer you get to God, the more sense everything in life makes.
Truth simplifies life.
The simple truth is that you were made for fellowship with your Creator. Without Him you are lost and without hope in this life. The sinful nature in us all pushes God away and wants to live by its own rules. The wages of our sin is certain death. But God still loves you, and paid your debt for sin through shedding His blood on the cross. By simple faith, you can put your trust in Christ and draw near to God.
For more than four decades I’ve shared the simple message of Jesus and watched lives change through the power of His words. He overcame death itself through the Resurrection. Surely, He can overcome your anger, your drug addiction or personal failure. He brings new life to your heart and new hope for your future.
Watch the movie. You’ll enjoy it. But remember, Truth is the real “Timeless Classic”.
